So a thread on 22/7 #ナナブンノニジュウニ. Now that their game has come out I remembered I wanted to share my thoughts on the anime and what I liked / didn& #39;t like. Spoilers
When the show first started I was intrigued. The wall aspect was mysterious and different and Miu was an interesting protag. Since the first few episodes were dedicated to her I thought maybe they wouldn& #39;t go down each girl gets an episode path but...they did
To me, that& #39;s when the show kind of lost me. Miu had gotten so much of the short seasons time it greatly affected the rest of the show. Over the next seven episodes, we get character filler that varied from interesting to filling time.
Jun& #39;s episode is the best one. Feeling the most real & using the time to get me heavily invested in her more so than any other character. Her episode felt the most organic and the karaoke scene using a real song added to the charm. The emotional beats really hit strong
Following her is Akane& #39;s episode. Her backstory is unique and formative for her character, certainty her actions are what lead to her "misfortune" and it really laid out why she is who she is. The ending where she started to cry felt a little weak
Ayaka and Reika come in next. They have more personality put into their episodes but nothing that stands out. At the bottom is Miyako and Sakura who had some different points about them but were the least impactful.
That leaves Nicole who honestly gets kind of the biggest shaft. The whole season they allude to the fact that she wants to become a pro idol where everyone else seems to just have gone along with the ride. But the fact she has a history with Miu was so out of left field for me
Like where was any foreshadowing about them? We had three whole Miu episodes in the beginning PLUS Miu gets tons of screen time elsewhere and they couldn& #39;t drop any hints about Nicole& #39;s past with her at all? It would have really helped the push to the end to keep the intrigue up.
It would have been so easy to just drop one or two dialogue hints, a photo she hides away fast from when they were in the same class. ANYTHING?? Instead, it& #39;s treated like some sort of twist that just fell flat for me
By the end, after the group disbands it was interesting to see how being in the group really impacted them but the wall at that point was being so random to the point I was confused. And when they all show up and get dressed it felt really contrived
However, you can tell with the breaking of the wall scene someone had that idea from the beginning and it was poignant. That was a standout moment for the show, the girls breaking thought the wall of expectations to take their own destiny was powerful and moving
But when they reveal the wall was some...creepy stalker?? The mystery was better than the reality. And then they run out to a concert? I was pretty underwhelmed after such a powerful moment
This brings me to their music. I know their sound is not the typical idol vibes. They are more serious or "real". But the big finale being Muzui was wow a shock. To finally see what the lyrics were they were SUPER depressing. They have some uplifting songs and I would have liked
Something a little more upbeat for their big comeback moment. The character solo songs were all fine nothing such a banger I would want to hear it over and over. I think my fav song will remain Rikaisha.
So this thread is long but to sum up my thoughts 22/7 had a lot of interesting ideas that never really went anywhere or fell flat for me. The show could have benefitted better from a more overarching story or more time put into them solving the wall mystery than the anime...
becoming a character of the week introduction. Plenty of other idol shows have been able to showcase their casts in a less forced way to better results. I& #39;m not even saying the more somber mood was a bad idea if anything that was a fresh take, something I haven& #39;t seen since...
WUG which also had a lot of emotional beats and realism. But I can& #39;t say the anime made me anymore invested in the group then I already was.

I can& #39;t say it& #39;s on the top of my recommended list for people looking for idol shows when I think stronger shows exist.
