news break: it's unfortunately my last week @WIRED. it has been great, and that's because of team lead @dustrud. h/t also to @fvogelstein @sandraupson @jetjocko @markrobsf @sarahfallon @lyderature @snackfight @jaydayhey et al. given recent unmoorings in media, i have thoughts. 1/
it sucks when friends and colleagues get laid off, and of course we express how sorry we feel. but let me propose something: if you are hiring, hiring for anything, please hire a journalist, no matter how not-so-perfect the position may seem. 2/
are you looking for a copywriter? hire a journalist. do you have QA or production work? hire a journalist. a social media opening? hire a journalist. journalists in general hone valuable, marketable skills: observing, learning, planning, executing, analyzing, thinking ahead. 3/
i've received irksome emails like “we need someone super on point with the tools we're using,” as if software tools were the stuff of mystics and wizards. (journalists work past spin, that goes with the job.) 4/
seeking a multitasker that can have a team deliver projects on recurring deadlines? hire a journalist. desperate for deep dives on esoteric issues to attain subject matter expertise, while sparing you the bullshit? tl;dr please hire a journalist. 5/
saying sorry to journalists, that's nice and appreciated, so long as we understand what we need—to be hired and to work. we don't need to hear how we're overqualified and underqualified at the same time. 6/
i'm ready for the next creative chapter, DMs open. in the meantime, you can support the journalism of an independent #SF publication i've co-founded @TheFrisc. donations are tax-deductible, and thanks!
