Over the past decade we've seen Minneapolis highways, malls, buses, light rail lines, and sporting events either shut down or inconvenienced because of peaceful protests. These events didn't cause significant change and were largely forgotten. What did we expect would come next?
Take all the sadness you're feeling for our community, for our neighbors, and for the peaceful life you hoped your kids would grow up in and now imagine you have to feel that sadness for decades. Not only that, but any attempt to change things is resisted by the majority.
When does that sadness become anger? When are you tired of talking about it? When is it not acceptable anymore? How many deaths is too many deaths? Would I riot or loot? No. But I'm not the one being targeted. I don't know what I'd do if these last few days were normal life.
As a Christian, I believe that a time is coming when pain and injustice will be taken away. But that is no excuse to ignore what is happening. Isaiah 1:17 says "Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause."
Stop looking only at how things affect you. Love others. Sacrifice. Don't make the oppressed feel like they are on their own. Whether you have a relationship with God or not, if you abhor injustice and hate it is time to stand and speak together.
I, like many others, need to do more. I can't change anything from my home office. But together, we can work to make it known that those who support love, equality, and justice for all truly are the majority. Freedom for some is not truly freedom unless it means freedom for all.
The time to stand up was long ago, but today is better than tomorrow.
