When I was 11, my dad & I were rehomed 2½ miles away from my primary school. I used to wake up extra early on Monday mornings to buy my weekly bus ticket. Forgot money one day & the headteacher had to pick me up from the nearest school, because my dad went to work. I was in Y6.
When I was in Year 7, free travel was instated across London. As a child from a single-parent family on free school meals, this was an incredibly helpful and important decision by @TFL. My secondary school had children from all across the Borough (Waltham Forest) who benefitted.
I went to college in Angel, Islington and was able to come out of my shell and develop beyond the area I had grown up in, because of the free travel. I visited galleries, museums and markets for inspiration for my creative A-Level, without limitations.
What I'm trying to say is quite simple: Free travel for Under 18s is SO beneficial and the government are honestly making such a HORRIBLE mistake in ceasing it.
