People from outside of Minneapolis: Lake street is one the most diverse streets in all of Minneapolis. It is also one of the most highly segregated. For generations Black and Brown and Indigenous communities have lived with lie of Minnesota, its hypocrisies and stark contrasts
Lake street is a hub of our city, it is also one of the few streets in Minneapolis you can walk from majority BIPOC & immigrant businesses, community centers, low-income housing& the next block over have majority white-elite businesses, luxury apartments/condos, again segregated
There's a longstanding history of Minneapolis elites ignoring the plights & concerns of the most vulnerable of our community, there's been a gradual & deliberate move to gentrify all of Lake street, that has accelerated dramatically over the last 5-10 years,
For every Lux apt built there's an increase in the # of folks experiencing homelessness visibly.Additionally, there's been a dramatic increase rent in the city & predatory landlords who take advantage of vulnerable immigrant community who rent both residential & retail properties
In the city of Minneapolis and in Minnesota overall the health outcomes, educational outcomes, economic, literally all measures of any quality of life are amongst the worst in the nation for Black, Brown, & Indigenous communities
This is in direct and dramatic contrast to the health, income, again, any measure of quality of life for that of our white counter parts (not just the white elite). This history is important to note when understanding the sheer & utter longstanding & highly ignored pain of our ppl
Again, I can not stress the dramatic Paralleled contrasts of our city of our state and of Lake street enough. The disparities are amongst the worst in the nation. Where the average white person thrives ( MN is on every “best of list” ), BIPOC communities struggle to survive
To contextualize specifically regarding the economics of our MN: the average Black MN earns around $30k ( $20 if you’re a Black immigrant) the average White MN earns $70 a year. this is all listed in Minnesota’s state demographic site & there have been several reports, surveys,
Articles& such ( you can look them up) to confirm what the average BIPOC Minnesotan & resident of Minneapolis knows by experience and by what we witness: The city that we love, that we tend to, the city that benefits from our labor & continues exclude, ignore, & harm us,
Our city has never been safe for BIPOC communities especially Black and Indigenous folks. Our folks are continuously berated, policed, surveilled, excluded from economic opportunities, covertly & overtly discriminated against, systemically attacked, again in direct contrast
to our counterparts, it is simultaneously amongst the best and worst cities to live in. Before you criticize, know the conditions of this frostbitten place
My internet has been unstable this whole time—these tweets kept being deleted after a repeated failure to upload along with links. All of the above information is searchable from our state and local reports on health, educational, and economic disparities of our community
If you care about the people of Minneapolis, stop focusing on Burt properties and help protect our most vulnerable communities from this militarized police & COVID-19
Also, I’m just so angry that the most vulnerable of my community whom were already suffering are not only even more at risk for COVID-19, are being attacked by militarized police, will have no groceries, no access to health care, in a city that already had no love for us.
It feels like attempted and strategically designed genococide
How many ppl from outside of southside care that there is a whole generation of Black, Brown & Indigenous youth exposed to the virus with even less access to resources to protect & save them, again this city has never loved us & will not give a fuck when symptoms manifest
