Well I got blocked for the first time (that I know of). I disputed this tweet saying that 2-3 people were being killed by cops in the city daily. I'm assuming they were talking about Minneapolis seeing as that was the context of the conversation before. Thread:
After the killing of George Floyd, I researched heavily into killings by cops in MN (since this is my community and I can't fix the problems of LA/NY from here) and here is what I learned:
Since 2000, there have been 193 individuals killed by cops in MN. Not 2-3 per day in Minneapolis.
Of those deaths, 27 (14%) were unarmed. Of those 27, 13 were white, 10 were black, 3 were Hispanic, and 1 Native American.
Of the 193 killed total, 107 (55%) were white, 49 (25%) were black, 10 (5%) were Asian, 9 (5%) were Hispanic, 15 (8%) were Native American, and 3 were other
MN population is 84% white, 7% black, and 9% other races. Minneapolis is much more diverse with population being 60% white, 20% black, 10% Hispanic, 6% Asian, 4% other.
When it comes to specifically Minneapolis police killings, 21 (61%) were Black, 5 (15%) were white, 3 (9%) were Asian, and 5 (15%) were other races (Hispanic, NA, unknown)
In both Minneapolis and MN, the data certainly shows that black people are disproportionately killed by police.
14% were unarmed. That number should certainly be zero. In fact, I would argue that the total number of people killed by police should be a lot closer to zero than it currently is. 14 MN police officers have been killed on duty since 2000.
The purpose of this thread is not to tell you to think one way or another, but rather to do your research and form your own opinions. I know through this period, my thinking has changed a lot, and I think for the better.
I grew up outside of the city and and had many preconceptions about the city. Now that I live here and it's my home, I've changed my thinking and moved towards understanding of lives vastly different than my own. That is all.
