In my non-writer life, I train, teach, and write on topics of race. I could say many things here, but i'll share this: Racial violence doesn’t begin with physical force, it begins when we ingest and share the cultural messages that Black people (and other POC, too, but I’ll (1/3)
focus on Anti-Black racism) are not as fully human as white people. Think about the things we, as humans, can and do justify when someone ceases to be a person and becomes an object. This isn't new; it's the vestiges of colonialism and chattel slavery and it's alive & well. (2/3)
It doesn't begin with physical violence. It begins with every day choices like which books to read, to listen to Black voices or justify, rationalize, and dismiss racism concerns as exaggerations. It doesn't begin with physical violence, but it ends there too often. (3/3)
