A thread on why I think Charlotte Katakuri is one of the best antagonists.
1. Introduction:

Katakuri was introduced as this big badass guy, sick character design, sick overpowered ability and the highest known bounty at that time...that alone has set the bar high for his character, there's already so much hype about this character immediately, which-
-which makes this introduction a very well done short one.
2. Characterization:

After all this hype there's more, brulee said katakuri is a PERFECT being, never lost in his life, never laid on his back, he's always calm & collected but everything I mentioned till here completely shatters, oda always breaks these generic tropes.. because
in one piece there's no such thing as a "PERFECT" character, one piece characters are flawed, they're very human like, and this was proven in this case when luffy exposed kata eating donuts and laying on his back, which brings us back to the "calm" katakuri, another flaw for his-
character now. He gets angry quickly which led luffy to actually land a hit on him.
3. Character design:

One piece often gets criticized for its character designs since they're very different and unusual, but I disagree, because in one piece even a character design can add more characterization to the character...the first assumption is that katakuri hides his-
mouth because he's ashamed of it, but that's not the case at all which brings us to the next point.
4. Backstory:

Backstories are important to flesh out a character and reveal more layers about it, and THAT'S character development, katakuri's backstory was EXTREMELY short but it was about the main theme of this arc which is "family",katakuri didn't hide his mouth because he's
ashamed, he did it to make everyone actually fear him and believe this myth so his family doesn't get hurt again.
5. How much impact did katakuri leave on the MC:

This is a very important thing about antagonists specifically, katakuri added so much more to luffy, while katakuri was getting developed as a character luffy was as a fighter, luffy NEEDED to surpass this wall, but what makes-
this fight special is that it's not a typical fighter vs fighter, it was a man vs man, both characters kept gaining more respect to each other, and the similarities between the characters + parallels in a MIRROR world was a great touch-
also I think oda handles luffy's strength progression very well, it's slow but realistic.
