The only reason the UK wouldn't set up a charter city for ALL Hong Kongers, on some empty piece of land on the coast somewhere, is that it seems weird and unprecedented. There is no good argument against it. If it took off it would turn the UK into a powerhouse 👍🇬🇧
There's only one man in govt who thinks big enough for this to happen. I hope he won't hold it in and piss away our chance to save the HKers and ourselves as well.
The yellow areas are the empty parts of the UK. The govt could set up a special administrative zone in one of these places where Hong Kong-equivalent law ruled, and where all Hong Kongers (and Brits! And more!) could move to freely. A new city and a new hope. Let's do it!
Here's @paulmromer, who won the Nobel Prize for Economics last year, on charter cities. They're less science fiction than they may sound and setting one up would give the UK a huge new source of the greatest resource of all: human ingenuity! 👨‍🔬🧠👩‍🔬
