Born into slavery, he bought his freedom in the 1780s and joined St. George's Church.

Her works have been considered a defense and celebration of black culture. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama.

Because of her age, the NAACP chose not to use her case to challenge segregation laws.
Medgar Evers | Civil Rights Activist | 1925-1963:
Evers was an American civil rights activist. Evers was assassinated by a white supremacist in 1963, inspiring numerous civil rights protests which sprouted countless works of art, music and film.
Bayard Rustin | Civil Rights Activist | 1912-1987: he was an American leader in social movements for civil rights, socialism, nonviolence, and gay rights. He was a key adviser to Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1960s and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.
Martin Luther King, Jr: is known for his contributions to the American civil rights movement in the 1960s. His most famous work is his โ€œI Have a Dreamโ€ (1963) speech, in which he spoke of his dream of a United States that is void of segregation and racism.
Rosa Parks; was a civil rights activist who refused to surrender her seat to a white passenger on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Her defiance sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Its success launched nationwide efforts to end racial segregation of public facilities.
Madam C. J. Walker (1867-1919) was โ€œthe first black woman millionaireโ€ and made her fortune thanks to her homemade line of hair products for black women. she was inspired to create hair products after experience with hair loss, which led to the creation of the โ€œWalker systemโ€
Thurgood Marshall: applied to University of Maryland Law School, but was denied because he was black. he was accepted to Howard University Law School that year. his first court case came in 1933 when he successfully sued the University of Maryland.
