Major changes must be made to our roads to enable sustainable travel in our communities

We are asking @lb_southwark to take bold and ambitious action to ensure our streets have safe walking and cycling provisions during and after this crisis

Traffic is already rising across the UK, with many likely to switch from public transport to private vehicles in the future. Wuhan saw a dramatic increase in car use after lockdown.

If car owners in Southwark switched their public transport trips to car trips we'd have a 76% increase in the borough.

This increase does not include residents of other boroughs driving to or through Southwark. Our streets don't have the capacity for more traffic
But only 40% of households in Southwark have a car.

The majority of people have no access to a car yet face these impacts the most.

Car ownership increases with income. This TfL data includes outer London, car ownership is even lower in Southwark.
Southwark has some of the highest bus use in inner London.

Buses will have no space, or be too crowded to be safe, and will be stuck in traffic.
Most of Southwark is lacking a safe cycle network, especially in the south of the borough.

Without safe space to cycle, many of the people we now see out riding their bikes will stop.
We must also decarbonise London's roads by 2030.

We have no choice but to decrease motor vehicle use.

This requires ambitious solutions. We have identified key measures Southwark Council and TfL can take to build a sustainable transportation network in a post Covid-19 world.

These must be accessible to all and will:

Enable safe journeys taken by active travel

Provide space for physical distancing in neighbourhoods

Support people while visiting their high streets
To get there we need your support. Tell your councillors we need major changes fast.

Once Southwark announces their plans, they'll hear from people opposing these schemes. Those can't be the only voices they hear.
