I have been thinking about Amy Cooper’s “apology” a lot. The “I’m not racist” argument. The fact that she’s identified as liberal. The fact that calling Chris Cooper an African American probably signals in her own mind that she’s not a racist. (1/4)
But racism isn’t going to KKK meetings. It’s not just hatefulness. It’s a system us white folx have benefitted from simply by being born white. We can’t excuse ourselves from doing the work bc we vote Blue or whatever. We can’t say “I don’t see color” and sit back. (2/4)
AC may have been afraid (because racism!) but I think she was also angry bc she perceived that a Black man dared tell her what to do (because, yup, racism!) I want her so badly to do the work that needs to be done. I am no expert. I’m trying to do the work myself. (3/4)
The more I learn about Amy Cooper the more I recognize her. I’ve met her a thousand times. Maybe I’ve even been her, or a version of her. Hers is the kind of racism that is prevalent in the Northeast. I dunno. Read “White Fragility” bc it’s life changing. That’s all. (4/4)
