What people are discovering today about arguments in the Supreme Court:
1. Has been progressively deteriorating over past 2-3 years
2. Attacks on credibility of petitioners who approach the court for enforcement of fundamental rights
3. Judges have done little to check it
4. The quality of citation in precedent and legal reasoning has plummeted.
5. Use of assertions made from petitioners has come under heavy scrutiny requiring expert affidavits while those by government entities permitted on the basis of oral statements and assurances.
6. Beyond parties routine personal statements have been made and motives ascribed to lawyers. Quite often these are forms of labelling.

7. A race to bottom of professional standards. People know about it is because of the growth of legal journalism & live tweeting.
Seemingly a non-sequitur but it is an appeal. More young, displined, competent people need to join the bar. We are passing through times in which profound issues on public law will be determined. Even in this period there exist opportunities for strategic & incremental victories.
For those who have the courage to do & those who have the stamina to sustain public interest lawyering in these times please do consider supporting them with kindness. Reward their courage & strengthen their resolve. They are dealing with an environment which reeks of aggression.
