I'm seeing a lot of hot takes on what to do about police brutality on my TL. Abolishing them - that's never gonna happen; training them - they're already trained peeps. 1. I don't want citizens groups policing, I know history.
Proper LEO training is not yokels in the community deciding something is up. That's Ahmaud Arbery right there. No, we need an organized LEO in modern society. What we have is an occupying paramilitary. You have to take a different tactic.
By now, there's probably others teaching this. It's been time to prove this isn't science, it racism & authoritarianism giving cops the mindset that murder is their right because they're always afraid.
2. Prosecutors & IA. Cops lie on the stand, are proven to lie & can go back home, eat a nice meal & go back to work the next day. If a citizen would be charged, then a cop should be charged. Period. Why can cops stand & watch their buddies fake evidence or abuse people?
Because they don't face a consequence. That's on DAs & Internal Affairs. What fuck is your purpose if LEOs can lie to you yet keep on trucking? Demand equal accountability.
3. Police unions/PBAs. These are some of the strongest unions with golden contracts for members & coveted endorsements. Break them. No political endorsements allowed. All judgements against abuse come from their wallets.
Police unions do not stand with other unions, so I have no sympathy for them. They want all the protection, abuse the protection (the way cops abuse OT pay is criminal - 100hrs in a week?) & deserve to be broken.
4. Thorough background checks & ongoing criminality checks. You can't be a cop & have a DV record. You can't be a cop & be a 3%er. Or an Oathkeeper.
5. A citizen led oversight board to review complaints.
All those, way more possible than abolishment.
