You know what I think of whenever I see a blue lives matter flag? How the US has the highest percentage of prisoners in the entire world, nearly 25% of all prisoners globally.
By the time I was born the US prison industrial complex was already the new Jim Crow, the new way to harm Black and Brown bodies, enforced by the police system. This is the imagination I was born into, along with so many others.
We don’t know how to imagine a different world, but the news from the past few days, weeks, months, years tells us we have to. Blue Lives Matter isn’t a sentiment. It’s propaganda to convince us any other way is impossible.
A question I ask but don’t have the answer to: do you think we have lost our imagination for restorative justice because of our police system, how it was set up, and who it targets and punishes? And how removed many privileged Americans are from the process?
