As @emilymkeeler pointed out, the first set of news stories ONLY had the police account. And police accounts are *rarely* reported as having to be proven to be true when we KNOW the police have misled the public, especially in cases involving the deaths of Black men and women.
It's incredibly lazy to report "people claiming to be family members."

FIND OUT! IF YOU'RE A REPORTER IT'S YOUR FUCKING JOB. GO TALK TO WITNESSES. GET ON THE GODDAMN PHONE.
It's also beyond insulting to frame it that way, as if these witnesses automatically shouldn't be believed.

What if they were white? Would they be spoken about so dismissively? Framed in a way that they should not be believed?
Also this line: "However, these allegations have not been substantiated."

The copy already said "allegations." No one needs another line explaining what a fucking allegation is.
The whole story misses the point.

The point is it's a fucking tragedy that a 29-year-old Black woman is dead.

The point is that witnesses say she was PUSHED by the police while the police say she fell.
And where is the CONTEXT? The point is also this isn't the first time an inconsistent account involving a death when police are involved.

This is why people tell me they don't trust the media. It's fucking embarrassing.
It's white supremacy at work to erase accounts of Black people mourning a death they just witnessed. It's the way brains writing the copy are wired, the way institutions who allow such copy to be published are wired.

It's not a mistake or an oversight.
