I will never understand why people are ashamed to admit their privilege. Certain people who benefit from certain kinds of privilege act as though they're missing out on something.
They jump on movements because they feel as though they're being neglected, completely misunderstanding why these movements exist in the first place.
All lives matter is a statement that can only be true if black lives matter - the reality is that institutionalised racial prejudice is still extremely prevalent and is in fact the backbone of the criminal justice system and as a result, black lives are treated as inferior.
Pride can only coexist in relation to shame; straight people have never been systematically shamed for their sexuality and so pride cannot exist for them in the same way that it does for the LGBTQ+ communities that have had their existences entirely invalidated for decades.
Not all men is not a good enough excuse when some men are rapists and abusers and their behaviour is condoned and in some ways encouraged by the misogynistic society we live in.
People who do not speak up on these issues are complacent in the injustices that minority groups face in much the same way that the cops who let Derek Chauvin murder George Floyd were complacent in his death.
There is no shame in admitting that as a white person you have privileges that people of colour don't.
There is no shame in admitting that as a straight person you have privileges that LGBTQ+ people don't.
There is no shame in admitting that as a man you have privileges that women don't.
There is only strength in realising that you can use the privilege you have to benefit those without it.
I wish that accepting the privilege we have according to the privileged groups we belong to was more of an accepted thing because there is no shame in admitting that you have advantages that other groups don't so long as you work to support those disadvantaged people.
