My simple tricks to run more (and farther) when I don't feel like running THREAD

1) I've run consistently for over a decade, I run roughly 1,000 miles a year and do 4-6 marathons a year with my Mom (goal is to do one in all 50 states together). A dirty little secret is I RARELY "feel" like running.
2) Because I rarely feel like running, I subscribe to the '1 or 10 rule': Commit to running a minimum of 1 mile or 10 minutes before stopping. Lifted from 'Tiny Habits' book by @bjfogg - Until my body is warmed up, it's easy to say you're feeling shit and having an off day.
3) After you've warmed up, do a few pickups, just some 30-second bursts of speed to turn the legs over and shake out any lingering tiredness. Do a little burst to get into the 8:00min/mi range, then 7:00min/mi, then 6:00min/mi if you can. 20-30 seconds in each range is fine.
4) You're now at least 1-mile into a run that you didn't want to do in the first place. Now commit to running just one more mile, just to see if you feel better. If you still feel like shit after your second mile then give yourself permission to pull the ripcord.
5) The most important step... run in the opposite direction of your house. You're now at least 20 minutes in, so if you turn around now (2 miles away from home) and just slow jog back home you've got a nice little 4-miler in the books. Probably half of my runs end like this.
6) I've called an Uber halfway into a long run before. I have no shame.
7) Like most things in life, running is all about consistency, and for me, it's repeatedly doing something I loathe. Over time, even if you despise running, the habit is formed and you get in the miles regardless.
8) 10 years in, I only have a couple "good" runs a week, the rest are simply dealt with. I've got a 6-mile run today and it won't be great, but it will get done. That's where I'm at.
