Main duty of an Australian leader in a crisis like this is to let every Australian know their Govt will look after them & we will not be throwing our vulnerable to the wolves. Canberra obsessing over who has ministerial ears while millions face ruin is why a reckoning will come. https://twitter.com/CroweDM/status/1265054281662488576
In the space of hours, we had millions of innocent Australians out of work & forming socially not-distant lines outside Centrelink offices to go through the indignity of filing papers for welfare. The Australian psyche recoils at the idea of bayonetting our wounded (cf Hewson, J)
This whole Pandemic experience has destroyed the lives, jobs, and security of millions. Idea that citizens reduced to exacting revenge at the ballot box will not do so is fanciful. Canberra needs to have a deep think about what may be coming its way if this is a deep recession.
Australians were told, for decades, their superannuation was their retirement savings for old age. Our workers did their part. Telling them now to 'dip in' to that to alleviate the Govt from its job of helping them is a disgrace & will also 'leave a mark', as the saying goes.
If you are conservative, what you are conserving is the Australian nation itself, not some fringe ideology of dead, weird, perverted Europeans. That means our government steps in, perhaps for a while, as it does when the nation is at war. It means we look after our people.
One reason every young Australian grows up learning the story about Simpson and his donkey at Gallipoli is because Simpson epitomised that part of the Australian spirit that says we look after each other & we go back for our wounded. The Govt ignores that sentiment at its peril.
Will end my rant by observing that anyone who lived through the 1990s recession, even if not hurt by it, has never forgotten it. The cost of Govt stimulus to wealthy Australia compared to that of prolonged unemployment, ruined families, schooling interrupted etal is a pittance.
