Till the 1980s, 90% of South Americans identified as Catholics. In 2014 that number had declined to 69% and the trend has continued since. The leavers have shifted to the Pentecostal church. https://qz.com/342810/why-the-catholic-church-is-losing-latin-america-and-how-its-trying-to-get-it-back/amp/">https://qz.com/342810/wh...
Majority of Protestants in Latin America were raised as Catholics, all of this change has occured within a generation.
The political effect of it is most visible in Brazil. Evangelicals now form 25% of the pop & Catholics are expected to become a minority by 2030. Bolsonaro himself a Catholic has allied with Evangelicals & his own son is a Protestant. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theatlantic.com/amp/article/551423/">https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp...
It is happening in India too, apart from converting non-Xs, Pentecostals are gaining converts from traditional Catholic denominations in India.
