Today is Menstrual Hygiene Day #MHDay2020 and we need to discuss Period Poverty. A term that is too common for a biological process that has gone on since the beginning of time 
. Roughly half of the women population (26% of the world's pop) menstruates between 2-7 days.

And every month women need to use pads or tampons. Until 2004, In Kenya, they were taxed as luxury items. And yet they are still too expensive for some women and girls.

So what is period poverty? Refers to lack of access to menstrual hygiene tools and resources; washing facilities, sanitary products and waste disposal

And even when they manage to get a pad/two, to avoid "overusing" the minimal resources, they'll use one pad for hours even when full. They lack access to proper disposal. Ladies we know how refreshing it feels to shower while on our periods, now imagine if you couldn't. #mhday
In Kenya, a girl committed suicide after she was shamed by her teacher. Girls are missing school because they can't get pads. Others don't have panties to secure the pads. Tissues. I would hate to imagine a girl sitting on the floor to let it flow. This is what we DISCUSS

It's also unfortunate that to this day, a lot of dudes feel embarrassed to buy their women sanitary products. This is STIGMA. When a shopkeeper insists on wrapping it in paper to "hide the shame", that is STIGMA. That prevents us from having discussions about the resources. #mhd
