I'm really less than convinced about online activism calling out people for being Nazis as a way to "save them". More often than not there's no follow-up from alot of these amateur accounts just looking to just out people for clout. Someone is outed and then "onto the next thing"
I personally watched this happen earlier this year. All it did was further alienate the person from the leftists trying to help this person into seeing them as disillusioned trolls. There was no care about the individual, only investment in the stir it would cause in outing them.
It set off alarms for ever fashy person who didn't give a shit before to go follow them and and start supporting them financially. This person's toxic ideas, which they were starting to be weeded out, are now being reinforced by "fans" who stabilize their livelihood.
These new fans homed in on the individual involved with the interest of regrooming them back into the dark ideologies they were leaving. It's now impossible to tell if they've gone even deeper crypto or are making genuine strides but their financial well-being is now compromised.
The page that outed him did so after essentially spamming his accounts with vague threats rather than genuine concern as justification for the outing. The screencaps are 4chany. All that was accomplished was sending up a flare & tagging them for actual fascists to take interest.
There was no follow up. The people who were working with the individual were shut out from suspicions of ulterior motive which are reasonable to have with dealing with ANYONE online. At this point the person might as well be lost & the fash are armed with a propagandist.
I can't imagine must go through the heads of the people running that outing account. I'm not going to name it. I feel bitter enough to read a self-congratulatory tone and the aura of validation in almost everything they post. You guys got your likes, I guess, but at what cost?
I'm not trying to say that outing is never a the right thing to do, either. Sometimes it's necessary, like in the case of that person showing up at rallies. Obviously it can do wonders to break someone out of programming just to tattle on them to their mom on facebook.
Pundits and political figures running youtube thinktank channels should almost always get outed, because they have seductive influence. It counts as warning people of an obvious danger.
I guess what I'm saying is that with the boom of left-tube we're seeing alot of inexperienced hacktivists getting involved. This person's outing was treated so sloppily, it reminded me of hour a news-paper pushing something to press just to be the first to break "the big scoop".
There are people here who's "business model" is "activism". You might even say it's a "brand". These folks engage with their Work as if it was a small business or career. This is severely tainted by Neo-Liberalism & a capitalist mental framework. Brand Influencer Antifa, I guess.
Watching this unfold was pretty soul crushing. I played a major role in why I stopped posting here for awhile. This thread is just sort of a processing of how the Online Left can just be a "market". This is how Good Work becomes tainted.
How do we save the people we love from fascism? How do we keep from falling into the pit of Market Activism? These questions are compounded if there's financial reinforcement for either. I don't have a solution for either. Be adaptable. Be introspective. Don't be seduced.
It really hasn't helped me in coming back to see people at each other's throats or engaging in weird stanning. We could be at peak solidarity. We should be out engaging in work. I come back to... twitter infighting. Cool.

I don't even feel like posting art in this environment.
TL;DR.

Always be aware of the work that you are doing and the ramifications it will lead to both on a micro and macro level. Don't compete! We're not fish and we don't have to eat each other.

Time to get canceled or screamed at. đŸ€—
