Establishing non-police (and non-state) ways of keeping people safe in your community isn't just some pilot project to prove left policy ideas can work in the future, it's a life and death necessity right now
Bc of COVID middle class ppl are getting used to idea of precautions you should take to protect ppl more vulnerable then you
A mask might be uncomfortable
& unfamiliar, but it keeps your neighbours safe

They need to start to see "not relying on the police" as that type of thing
As a young healthy person u might prefer to go out but u stay in bc inviting virus could be deadly for some1 old or immunocomp.d

Similarly as a wht person u might prefer to have cops do things for u, but inviting them could be deadly for some1 blk, indigenous, poor, mentally ill
and the alternative isn't just replacing the police with a good version somehow, or flipping the "cops exist" setting from on to off, it's the actual hard and constant work of actively caring for your community and building structures in & for it
