All doomers know when the first *real* fan-made levels for Doom came out - but what about that weird time between Doom& #39;s release and Dylan Cuthbert& #39;s BSP builder? You had to play what we now call "IWAD Edits". It& #39;s exactly what you think it is.
How did this work? Basically, you can edit everything that doesn& #39;t require a new BSP to be built. That includes: flats, light levels, sector specials in some cases, floor and ceiling heights, textures, and thing placements. you can even make new switches!
One of the later IWAD edits came out in 2017 - Linguica& #39;s "Antrywey" - but in this case, the changes were in a Vanilla Doom save file!
These are a few choice gems from the pile that is IWAD edits, but if you were a doomer in those precious handful of months after Doom& #39;s release, this was the only way to play "more" levels, save for making a wad yourself in a hex editor (which some person actually did).
Since these are edits of IWAD maps, they are automatically rejected from idgames. However most of the better ones survive in many, *many* shovelware CD collections, just waiting to be rediscovered. And some are quite good!
And besides, what would you rather play in early 1994: an IWAD edit like this, or a "new level" like...uhh...
