I had someone who was a friend tell me they would pray for me when I came out as queer. They said my attraction to woman wouldn’t get me into “heaven.” Many queer people face much worse, but I carry the shame of the backlash from coming out to this day.
As the world gets more progressive, some people change their views without atoning to the people they’ve hurt. You don’t deserve praise because you decided certain people deserve rights.
It’s bullshit to say “I’ve been okay with the the discrimination of minorities, but NOW I draw the line!”
I will always appreciate someone genuinely trying to reflect and change their ways by being more open minded. But denouncing abhorrent racism doesn’t make you a good person. That should be a low standard.
Discriminatory people think posting “racism is bad!!!” absolves them of all the racism, sexism, homophobia, and general discrimination they’ve been apart of. Many people wear the scars you’ve given them.
This thread was not meant in any way to compare the different types of discrimination or the way certain people experience them. Just to acknowledge my anecdotal experience that some people who JUST NOW acknowledge racism is a thing, while also having a past
Of discriminating against minorities seemingly feel like they are changing the world by acknowledging the bare minimum. Do more.
