I really, really, absolutely love Fengxi and his story really resonated with me. And while we are shown his gentle and nurturing side, I can't forget his ruthlessness. He's known in the elfin world as borderline extremist. He hates humans but he's never lethally harmed any.
Yet, he has harmed them to lesser degrees. We know from context clues that the Guild has tried to contact him various times to no avail. If they sent Wuxian after him it's because all other attempts have failed. FX cares so much for his family and his elfin brethren but his goal
has taken over him and blinded him. If he had only stopped once, he would have seen that his brothers would choose him, and being able to stay together, over the plan. Unfortunately there are no maybes.

SPOILERS!!!

FX is justifiable angry and vengeful. We can emphasize with
him. He was absolutely destroyed by watching his home and his family's home get torn down and industrialized into a city of steel and concrete. Before that, they lived peacefully, coexisting. FX didn't always hate humans. In fact, MTJJ (director/creator) has said that even at
his worst, FX sometimes finds himself not fully hating humans, & this thought embarrasses him. Before he became an eco terrorist, he lived an idyllic life in his forest. He had no need to fight or to use violence. But his love and his resentment turned him ruthless and vindictive
He stages the attack on XiaoHei in the beginning, and its all done to endear himself to XiaoHei and push his agenda on him, to dislike and mistrust humans. He wanted to make XiaoHei loyal to him so he could use him. I do believe he cares for XiaoHei, you can see it in his
gestures and actions; how he doesn't want to hurt him, how he wanted to convince XiaoHei to help him rather than simply force him. FX is motivated out of love and desire to protect and champion his elfin brethren. But his love doesn't change that his way of thinking and behaving
are incredibly dangerous. He played us and XiaoHei so well, we all loved him! I didn't expect the incredible subversion of the found family trope that he set off, contrasting amazingly with Wuxian's narrative with XiaoHei.

Later, despite his love, despite that the reason why
he set off in this path in the first place was for and to protect elfin, FX hurts XiaoHei and rips off his Domain. XiaoHei's accidental meeting with Wuxian taught XiaoHei that not all humans are bad, and that while there are bad humans who have hurt elfin, their wrongs shouldn't
be carried by the normal every day humans simply trying to live by and do their best. If not for Wuxian's accidentally adoption, XiaoHei may have accepted FX's agenda and willingly helped, but again, there are no maybes here.

The end is really painful for me. I really do love
Fengxi a lot and his plight really resonated with me. While some are capable of moving on and rebuilding their lives, its still very difficult to expect someone who's life has been completely decimated to live alongside the group that represent the very people responsible for
their loss. It's the only way, because only by compromising can elfin continue to live, but its still painful and difficult. Regardless, Fengxi's actions are inexcusable, and he knows this. He knows he's gone too far and that there is no coming back from what he's done, and that
is why rather than surrender, he chooses to die. He can't face his brothers, whose sacrifices he wasted; he failed them the moment he chose the plan over his own morals, when he broke his own principles by hurting XiaoHei. He was driven to a corner and pushed until he broke,
until he felt he had no other options left. He just wanted to return to his home, to give his family back their home, but he never considered that by driving away all humans, he would be hurting innocent people and destroying their lives, much in the same way that was done to
him. He was too blinded. In the end, all he had left was his shame and his pain over betraying and hurting XiaoHei. He was embarrassed over his actions. Exhausted in all the ways one can be exhausted, tired of runing, tired of fighting. He didn't want to be chased away anymore.
He bacame the breath of the city, the place he once called his, so at least he will never be forced to leave his home again TvT

XiaoHei forgave him, and still thinks of him fondly, and visits his tree, as does Fengxi's family. You were, and are, still loved, Xi'Er.
