In 1990s LA white ppl used Koreans as a buffer between them and Blk neighborhoods. Police only protected rich white areas and essentially funneled all the riots towards the Korean stores. Now they AGAIN want to use Koreans as a rhetorical shield for their racism. Fuuuuck that

It's important to understand the discrimination Blk ppl faced by many shop owners in 1990s. Korean immigrants placed as a wedge between class stratified Blk and White neighborhoods in LA faced mistreatment, othering, language barriers etc from both communities. A pressure cooker.

People who bring this up to meme "Rooftop Koreans" to glorify 2A or whatever are wrong to do so. But I also see people talking about it like Korean snipers were just sitting up there picking off unarmed protesters... yeah no. Shit got burned. People on both sides were killed.

The Korean community was abandoned by the police, who only protected white neighborhoods. These immigrant families businesses that took years to build were left to be attacked and burned. The choice to take up arms was the choice to either fight or die.

The fallout was also brutal. These Korean store owners were trashed by the press. And in their politics, from then on, the Asian American community in LA was split. This is another lie people like bringing up--that the LA Koreans all became antiblack after the riots. It's a lie.

These lies are only convenient for racist white ppl who benefit from the distraction of Black and Asian communities fighting one another in the framework created to protect white supremacy. There are ppl who will continue buying in to that no matter what I say.
