I’ve seen a lot of my white friends, colleagues, counterparts, mutuals, etc, express their concern and support for the black community but tweets and hashtags can only go so far. Solidarity is great but black people deserve so much more than just symbolic gestures *a thread*
Black people have already laid the groundwork for our own liberation but we don’t hold the systematic power to challenge white supremacy at its roots— but y’all do.
The role of an ally in any social movement is to use a place of privilege to advocate for a specific community in ways that they cannot advocate of themselves. With that being said, white people, it’s time to step out of your comfort zone and change the culture in YOUR community.
This could be as simple as holding other white people accountable in predominantly white spaces where black voices aren’t present. Whether it be at the dinner table with family or in casual conversation with friends, you must be willing to have these tough conversations.
You must be willing to sit in your own discomfort for the sake of the community you are allegedly advocating for. I don’t care if it’s your grandfather or your best friend, you are morally obligated to introduce how systems of oppression actively work against the black community
Anything less than this is faux-activism and only serves to bolster your own savior complex. We don’t need white saviors, we need allies who are willing to take an active role in tearing down ALL systems of oppression. Lives are quite literally depending on it.
