the “all lives matter” movement created in response to the “black lives matter” movement is toxic and incredibly insensitive. it is an evasion of the civic and moral responsibility to acknowledge that the constitutional/human rights and value of black lives have never been- 1
-included in all lives. the blm movement doesn’t claim that only black lives matter, or that black lives are more important than other lives. the “all lives matter” trope is most popular among those who cling to the absurd idea that their natural- 2
-and legal rights are like a pie: if someone else gets a slice, that means less pie is left on the table for them. on the contrary, the opposite is true: the blm movement advocates for a society where the rights of all citizens are equally recognized and enforced, which is- 3
untrue of the status quo where injustice and violence is ignored and disproportionately concentrated in black communities. the bottom line is that the “black lives matter” movement was enacted to spread awareness about the ways black lives in the US are uniquely- 4
-endangered, and the pervasiveness of racial injustice. when opposers respond with “but all lives matter,” this implies that either this unique danger doesn’t exist or shouldn’t be talked about, which makes it racist and offensive. 5
