When I was younger, my mom always told me that if I needed to call the police, I needed to make sure I told them that my father is a black man. I didn’t understand why it was so important, I thought it was common.
Growing up, I realized that was hammered into me at such a young age because they wanted to do everything they could because, living in a white area, they knew what would be automatically assumed of my black father
White privilege is knowing you can always call and rely on police for protection because “their job is to protect us!”. Never having to think about you could be wrongly murdered for doing absolutely nothing wrong
I am terrified every day of my life that something is going to happen to someone I love because someone doesn’t like their skin color. Privilege is not having to worry about your family, or yourself, getting pulled over, confronted, or stuck in a messy situation
Just last week, my dad was walking outside of our apartment. And someone called him the n-word as they drove by. We live in coastal Southern California and this shit happens consistently
I talk myself down from ledges constantly. “My dad drives a nice car so that ups the privilege a bit” “He looks like a professional athlete, hopefully that helps”. But at the end of the day, he’s a black man in a country that doesn’t value his life as much as others
But NONE of that should matter. People should not be viewed as less than because of their skin color, but it’s proven time and time again that that’s not the country, or world, we live in.
#BlackLivesMatter https://abs.twimg.com/hashflags... draggable="false" alt="">. Always. #GeorgeFloyd’s life mattered. Every single person who has suffered at the hands of racism and white supremacy matters.
Check yourself if you can’t see the systematic issues here at play. Thank you if you’re not black and you’re speaking up. Please continue to spread awareness even when we’re not mourning the most recent and publicized unjust death.
