Community Policing is a 2 way street.
You, LEO need to build:
Trust
Respect
Community buy-in
The 1st step in that is simple:
An apology & acknowledgment that y’all have made mistakes
Step 2: ask for forgiveness and keep asking until you’ve earned it
Constant Community outreach /2
the Community needs you and you need the Community.
It should be a symbiotic relationship.
But right now it’s a leveraged “power” relationship & it’s disproportionately weighted against the Community you swore and oath “to protect & serve”
Regular stakeholder meetings are good /3
I happen to be personal friends with my local NAACP President.
He’s a good man & has a lot of great ideas
Nationally the @NAACP launched this program.
The current state of being Black in America and being a LEO
Stop talking at the community, talk with them https://naacp.org/campaigns/we-are-done-dying/
Again Community Policing can have big dividends for both the Community & Law Enforcement.
But it requires: respect, working together & trust
The African American Community rightfully so doesn’t trust you.
You need to address that first.
LEO needs to rebuild that bridge of trust/1
