One of the most disappointing things I hear repeated when I talk to other library residents is how their coordinators and supervisors literally don't talk to them. No regular check ins. Maybe sporadic ones? On the other end of the spectrum, there's micromanaging.
It's frustrating how many residents are worried about their contracts (e.g. we're term-limited so it's extra stressful planning for the future), daily work, work plans, prof dev, etc. with little to no support from the people whose job it is to support them.
I get that some coordinators are AULs, ULs, dept heads, or just really super busy, but my direct supervisor is our dean and we met regularly. Y'all need to make it happen or find someone else who has the bandwidth because this is important. It matters to your resident.
I'm slowly learning that library residencies aren't people-centered but institution-centered initiatives. I disagree with this approach. I find it harmful, especially if you're trying to recruit BIPOC.
This neglect has been a problem pre-pandemic but it's magnified right now because of all of the uncertainty. Y'all might not have good answers or any answer, but check in with your residents and see what they need. They need *some* of the support you promised.
I don't have the actual numbers but we know that many residents are BIPOC. Why are y'all recruiting us in order to neglect us? That's performative and harmful. We feel it.
Before anyone says #NotAllCoordinators or something, this message isn't for the ones who do their job. This message is for coordinators & supervisors who are failing their residents. We're not gonna last long in this field if you keep telling us you don't want us here.
All I do is run my mouth lately and annoy people and maybe no resident coordinators or supervisors will see this, but it's a real issue and it's impacting residents. I hope we all do better.
