Again I’m gonna broach on the subject of social justice and anime. Weathering with you is yet another entry in the long and vast list of anime centered around what only a voluntarily blind person wouldn’t see as social justice issues.
By far the majority of anime have as central characters the low middle class, the poor, the destitute. Here it’s no different. Hina’s mom passed away and they don’t seem to have any other adult or source of income. To be fair, this is basically fantastic realism.
Let’s get other examples from mainstream shonen anime? Naruto. Orphan. Poor. Asta. Orphan. Poor. Goku. Orphan. Poor. Kenshin. Orphan poor. Tanjiro. Doubly Orphan. Poor. I guess there needs to be a fan account named “your face is a social justice warrior” because weebs are dumb
But back to Weathering. Natsumi is a single adult women and most of her story in the movie is not being able to get a job. Hina works at McDonald’s and goes to sell her ability to support herself and her brother. In other words, women’s issues smacked right at the center of it
And one the bad guys: a guy just waiting on the fringes of society to take advantage of all this in order to use the underage girl for what’s is clearly prostitution.
But let’s talk about the boy. Hodoka runs from a clearly abusive home, and the abuse is clearly (also) physical. He does find a father figure in Suga, but one not willing past some point to risk his own standing in society to remedy this or even keeping his paliative help
He also criticizes Natsumi for telling Hina about the tenki no miko legend. A very clear patriarchal censorship on how women should communicate and what should they communicate to each other.
Going into deep water inaccessible for weebs, as it seems, this is a figurative way of the male figure censoring the adult woman from informing the younger one about the toll she’s expected to pay in society: you’ll be sacrificed if society deems it necessary. And it will.
Not at all unrelated we have Nagi as his TWO GIRLFRIENDS. But he’s cute so I’ll let it slide.
HE ASKS HIS GIRLFRIEND TO COME HELP HIM ESCAPE FROM THE POLICE BY CROSSDRESSING. This kid is in elementary school.
