I decided to shake up my quarantine habits, which is mostly watching old seasons of Survivor, by watching all the Wes Anderson movies. Anderson is a polarizing director but I’ve been a big fan for years. Since Rushmore came out while I was in high school.
I remember hearing of him a couple years before Rushmore when Anderson won an MTV movie award for something like “Best New Director” for his debut film “Bottle Rocket.” Unlike a lot of the MTVMA’s it seemed like a totally legit award given to a small indie film nobody heard of.
I didn’t think about it much until I saw Rushmore and loved it. High school was when I started putting together a huge DVD collection (sold about 400 dvds years ago). This Bottle Rocket dvd of mine is so old that it is two sided, widescreen and 4:3 formats.
Anyway I ordered Bottle Rocket and I remember the first time I watched it was at my dad’s house. It’s not as polished as Rushmore, but it establishes a lot of Anderson’s distinctive style and story elements and I recall it being very funny.
I won’t live tweet the entire movie since nobody is watching but me and I’m using my tv so no gifs or screenshots, but I might keep this thread going with a few thoughts along the way and a mini-review at the end.
