Recent poll results show that there is a decided lack of tomboy appreciation on anitwitter, or at least among my followers. To rectify this gross miscarriage of tomboy justice, I will begin with a standard top 15 list, but of my top 15 tomboy waifus only. Doing it RIGHT.

15. Kotobuki from Tsubasa: Those With Wings, the only Shojo manga here. She’s a spunky thief trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic 22nd century, pursued by her suitor Raimon. A lot of fun and attitude, and a very early example of short-haired tomboys that are still girly.

14. Aiko Kudou from Baka and Test. She’s not a main heroine, or side heroine. She’s barely supporting cast. But BOY is she amazing, my favorite in the show by far. A teasing little minx who can’t help but mess with the perverted boys, with "practical" experience in Health and PE.

13. Nikumi from Food Wars. While there are a few tomboy beauties in that show, Nikumi edges out the competition due to her skin/hair combo, her scanty clothes, and her “so obvious” crush on Soma, even with the tsun. Just one look will show her allure, with the A-5 Meat she’s got.

12. Ibusuki Ririsu/to from Hatsukoi Zombie. Stylish and cool, she's not only handsome and boyish like a tomboy, but straight-up dresses as a boy. In spite of her masculinity and tsun nature, Ibusuki holds a deep well of feminism inside of her that she desperately tries to squash.

11. Asuka Mishima from Kimi no Iru Machi. What’s there to say? This sport cutie won over my heart, even if she couldn’t win over Haruto’s. A heartbreak like hers made me support her even more, because as masculine as she is, she still holds a deep girly side that yearns for love.

10. Ryoko Takamachi from Spiral. Probably the most obscure on this list, Ryoko's a track girl, aided by her good athleticism due to being a Blade Child. She wholeheartedly puts herself towards looking out for her friends, including her love. Even if he thinks of her as a sister.

9. Seishiro Tsugumi from Nisekoi is another “girl dresses as guy” character, but her violent protectiveness really makes her inner girliness stand out. There’s a reason her chest is the largest, the inner femininity in her heart is yearning to burst free from her boyish exterior.

8. Sakura Mizukami from D-Frag. A big ol’ bundle of fun, Sakura is lighthearted and sweet, while remaining a complete mystery. Even her feelings towards others are mysterious. How deep does she go? Does she even like Kazuma? Whatever the truth may be, she’s a lot of fun to watch.

7. Tomo-chan. She’s the most adorable fang tomboy in the world, is all, and she works the hardest to be a girl every step of the way. But that just makes her natural tomboyish charm stand out more! Swaying men and women with her cuteness and beauty, Tomo-chan wa Onnanoko.

6. Suzuka Asahina from Suzuka. One of my first tomboy loves, Suzuka is a sporty girl to rival all sporty girls, and soars above them as well on the high jump. Headstrong and not backing down, Suzuka matches the MC perfectly, loving him and yet getting annoyed by him all the same.

5. Chisa Kotegawa from Grand Blue mixes kuudere with tsun in a perfect blend of tomboy goodness as she struggles to tolerate Iori’s annoyances in spite of how much she cares for him deep down. A girl who doesn’t hide, but lets you know how she honestly feels. Nice Body, Chisa!

4. Uruka Takemoto from Bokuben. What more can I say? The perfect swimming tomboy of tanned perfection, the Ebony and Ivory Mermaid, and the true winner and best girl of her series. Uruka won my heart and the MC’s by swimming passionately forward, never backing down for a moment!

3. Sakura Kinomoto from CCS. While on the surface she seems like a stereotypical girl, Sakura’s strong will and love of sports shows she’s anything but. One of the first anime showing that girls can be tough AND pretty, her honesty and pure soul saved the world from destruction.

2. Chihiro AND Ayumi from TWGOK. It's a tie. I just can’t include one without the other. The perfect foils, these two girls exemplify the masculinity and femininity of tomboys in perfect synchronicity, both displaying their shy beauty and strong will in a way that can’t be beat.

1. Number one, of course, is Ayame Toujou. Just look. Everything there is to know about her is down there. She always tries her hardest, even when she hates herself and her body. Awaiting for an eternity for someone to show her just how beautiful she really is inside. Best girl.
