i wanted to try and compile resources for supporting #BlackLivesMatter and finding justice for George Floyd. i'm sure similar threads are being spread as well but the more resources spread, the better
i will link, of course, resources for anyone to utilize right now but because i am speak as an ally, i'd also like to specify steps for other allies wanting to support. of course, if i don't include smth important or any information is wrong, i will be happy to correct or delete
To start, here is a list of currently available petitions that you can sign, they call for the officers involved in the killing of George Floyd to be charged with murder https://twitter.com/byersfilms/status/1265762726380539904?s=20
Additional ways to sign petitions https://twitter.com/conanlyrics/status/1265810227959455744?s=20
Some petitions require US zip codes - don't let this deter you. Some zip codes: 90015 (Los Angeles), 10001 (NYC), 75001 (Dallas)
The DA in charge of bringing murder charges is DA Mike Freeman from Hennepin County in Minnesota. This is his number for contact: 612-348-5550, this is his email: [email protected] Please tell him to arrest and charge all 4 officers involved in George Floyd's death.
Office of Police Conduct Review: [email protected]
^ Office secondary email for current case up to date information: [email protected]
Minneapolis Police: [email protected]
If you are able, please donate. This is the only approved and verified GoFundMe to donate to the family. https://www.gofundme.com/f/georgefloyd  If you see other GoFundMe's or donation links they are not official and the family's attorney is working on removing them.
Ofc not everyone is able to donate but particularly if you are a white ally and there are other purchases you can reasonably forego in favor of supporting George's family, I urge you to do so. You can also donate to Black Lives Matter on their website to fund organizing efforts.
Keeping up to date and continued efforts for justice are of the utmost importance. We cannot let George Floyd's story go unheard or fade out over time. Consistent action is required for progress and activism. Mental health and self-care is ofc important as well so for nb allies,
make sure you are speaking and not letting black activists shoulder the weight of this alone. It is your responsibility to promote black voices and not speak over them, but to bring attention and confront racism where you see it.
Protests have been met with violence from police. Speak up for protesters and their rights. Racism within police departments is systematic, widespread, and needs you to speak against.
In order to stay up to date, news sites such as the Associated Press are quick, generally accurate ways to gather important information. For George in particular, @AttorneyCrump represents the family and @Jacob_Frey / @MayorFrey is the Minnesota Mayor
Additionally, following activism-based twitters such as your local black lives matter chapter if there is an account @Blklivesmatter @ShowUp4RJ @COPALMN and ofc there are many more
Please be aware when searching for information, triggering photos and videos showing the abuse of George Floyd may be shared. Please take care of yourself and please don't share these images as they can be triggering for others.
Another way the BLM movement has continuously sought justice is through protests. Because of covid-19, this is of course difficult due to quarantine laws and concern for public safety. There are currently protests in Minnesota. If joining, please maintain 6ft and wear masks.
The family has released a statement asking for peaceful protests and social distancing when demanding justice.
If you are unable to protest physically, please make noise where you can. Please spread George Floyd's story and name. The internet is a powerful way to connect people and create change. The more action you can do, the better (donating, calling, signing petitions).
Speaking to nb allies in particular now, educating yourself is of the utmost importance, as is educating others. Do not expect black activists to educate you - it is not their job. Search for resources on your own and reach out to other allies for more.
This is well-known at this point but of course, reverse racism is not real, all lives matter is a loaded phrase promoted by those who don't wish to confront how they perpetuate and benefit from racism in their day to day life and do not wish to actively dismantle it.
This is a very, very serious subject. A man has died. Emojis, memes, jokes, reaction pictures, and comparisons to subjects that don't involve racism are inappropriate from nb people. Be respectful. Think out your words before you share. Understand how things can be interpreted.
Call out racism around you. Twitter is a wonderful resource. It cannot be enough. Speak to those around you, spread across accounts, don't shy away from opening up conversations.
There are many many many conversations and differences of opinion right now. No group of people is a monolith and no non-black allies should be speaking over or correcting or preaching to black activists with differing opinions on their own experiences. Know your place.
Support your friends, support your peers, be respectful, this is not about you or your feelings. Remember George Floyd, say his name, spread his story. But remember anti-blackness is institutional and constant. Remember all of it's victims
