/ Considering my background and what I do for a living, people have been asking me about #JusticeForFloyd and what can be done to remedy our racist and shitty policing. I usually talk in broad sweeping scopes, in thoughtful nuance, but not today....today I will be specific...
/There has been rapid co-opting of military culture among police, who cherry pick the most aggressive elements, but shrug off others, such as the fact that in the military YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR TEAMMATE'S ACTIONS. This whole "one bad apple" bullshit doesn't fly there.
/It creates a culture that encourages people to police their own for bullshit, and if they don't straighten it up, you take it up command (to cover your own ass). Police, however, have taken the opposite: Implenting Cosa Nostra values, like criminals do.
/ With that being said, when this shit happens, ENTIRE CHAINS OF COMMAND SHOULD BE ELIMINATED. No ifs, no buts. Captains demoted, Sgt's fired, partners arrested.

These bad apples, evidently DO, spoil the whole fucking orchard.
/ I'm going to say something else controversial. STOP the HERO worship. Its okay to give back pats, but the incessant necessity to hero worship police is at-best given overinflated egos, and at worst, used to mask oppressive regimes (Nazis did a lot of worshipping "heroes")
/Its this worship, this unquestioning loyalty, that has allowed police to flout, skirt, and fuck up their responsibilities - but avoid REAL reformative action, critique, and punishment, and sanctions.
/ In fact, it used to be that when a cop committed a crime in uniform, it was punished MORE severely, because it was aggravated by the fact that a crime happened under color of law. Laws actually exist because back then lawmakers saw this unequal power dynamic as dangerous.
