'Being young is a sin in #HK.' Police say 360 arrests yesterday (as of 9:30pm last night). The vast majority of arrestees were young people. Important to recognize that HK is in the midst of a full-scale crackdown even before the impending 'national security' laws are enacted.
Protesting is also a sin in #HK. All protests have been banned for weeks. Those who do protest are attacked by police. On public health grounds tho there've been almost no local coronavirus cases for weeks & large numbers of people are gathering in all kinds of other situations.
The basic human right to peaceful assembly has been effectively suspended in #HK, at least through #June4 but very likely indefinitely. W at least 360 arrests yesterday, at least 817 have been arrested since protests resumed on Apr 21 after a 3week hiatus.
The vast majority of those 817 arrests have been for 'unlawful assembly' (ie, just being there). This charge is used to remove people from the streets (ie, crush protests); few are put on trial for it. The 817 arrests include 360 arrests yesterday, 193 on May 24 & 230 on May 10.
Now, in all, at least 8,898 protesters arrested since June 9, 2019. (The 817 in the past month represents 9% of all arrests.) Of those 8,898, 1,385 have so far been put on trial, 41 convicted (32 from guilty pleas), 19 sentenced to prison & 5 to juvenile rehabilitation centre
In case you don't recognize the origin of the drawing at the top of this thread, it comes from this scene yesterday: the arrest of schoolgirls. The image is circulating widely on #HK social media & represents to many HK people the depths to which the regime has stooped.
