THREAD on today's changes to #AISH and why they are bad.

The UCP have altered the process for assessing eligibility for AISH applicants.

Now, medical eligibility will be determined prior to financial eligibility.

So, what does this mean? Read on, dear readers... 1/ #ableg
In order to qualify for #AISH, you need to meet three sets of eligibility requirements:

-General (I.e., you live in AB)
-Medical (proof of disability)
-Financial (I.e., you don't have $100k+)

This hasn't changed. But... #ableg 2/
...previously, General & Financial eligibility was assessed 1st. This makes sense because they're on the same form - Part A.

Medical was previously assessed 2nd, & requires it's own forms - Part B. It also requires the applicant's Dr. to fill it out... #ableg 3/
...which takes time & costs money.

Reviewing medical eligibility is also the longest part of the AISH application process, & according to the 2016 AG's report, can take up to 8 weeks.

That's why it was the last step.

...so, if an applicant failed to meet the financial criteria for AISH, the application could be quickly declined & they wouldn't need to go to the trouble of booking a Dr's appt, filling the medical form out, & waiting 8 weeks to only be declined after a medical review. 5/ #ableg
The UCP have changed this, swapping the order of processing medical and financial eligibility.

As of today, now all AISH applicants who are generally eligible (Part A) proceed to a review of medical eligibility (Part B), before their financial eligibility is considered 7/ #ableg
Remember the part where medical review takes 8 weeks? Yeah.

So now, all #AISH applicants will now have to fill out & submit this medical form, & then wait 8 weeks. Even if they are ultimately deemed ineligible, their application still goes through this process... 8/ #ableg
..whereas before, only those who have already passed the financial criteria would proceed to this long, time consuming, and frustrating step.

So what does this mean? The UCP claim it's 'streamlining' #AISH.

That's a lie, and I will tell you why: #ABLeg 9/
