1. So much this. There are *tons* of situations where police needlessly shoot people having mental health crises armed with knives, for example, where in many other countries the person would be apprehended alive. https://twitter.com/wesleylowery/status/1265762194500792320
2. Even when people are armed with guns, there are often cases where police don’t know that when they shoot. So the fact that a gun is later found (in the pants of the suspect for example) can’t possibly tell us whether the shooting was appropriate.
3. And of course, in many states OPEN CARRY IS PERFECTLY LEGAL and so possession of a gun by itself can’t possibly be justification for police shooting someone.
4. I love this video of UK police apprehending a machete wielding man having a mental health episode – and taking him to the hospital.
5. The UK video is in stark contrast to the Portland police killing of a man having a mental health crisis at a homeless shelter. The joke is, the homeless people at the shelter did a far better job of corralling/dealing with the man than the police.
