Don't weigh every Roto category the same in terms of where you place your emphasis when drafting. With Hitters, I never want to be short on SB or low in AVG. Boosting your team AVG if you have a base of low AVG guys is nearly impossible...
...and adding guys to give you an AVG boost (who also contribute elsewhere as well) late in the draft or on the wire is nearly impossible. I’ve gone over why attacking SBs in the first 6 rounds or so is so important
...basically you can get guys who give you SB while also helping/not hurting in every other category as well. SB guys who go later in the draft wreck your power stats and/or AVG not to mention those guys always get jumped early in the draft as the last SB guys go off the board
Finding SB on the wire is very difficult in a 15 team league, especially full-time guys. And when you do, BIG $FAAB will be spent on them and you’ll be competing with half the league for those guys. HR/RBI/R are certainly important as well, but not early in the draft...
I can find power anywhere in the draft and it’s the easiest thing to add on the wire. With Pitchers, I want a good ERA/WHIP first and foremost, then Ks. Ks are much easier to add compared to boosting your ERA/WHIP both later in the draft and on the wire.
...Ks are the easiest stat to predict year to year from a pitcher though so it’s the most “bankable” stat. Wins is by far the least important category because even though drafting good SPs on good offensive teams usually gives you a higher Win total, it’s also fairly random.
...DeGrom had 11 Wins last season while Marco Gonzales had 16. In any season, I favor the rate stats over the counting stats, but it could be especially important in a shortened season. A few blowups from starters or prolonged slumps from hitters could cripple your team...
...and it might take too long to recover in just a few months. This is why I want more stable SP and no low contact% hitters, at least early on. You can take your shots later once you’ve built a solid base to depend on.
And of course you guys know I think Saves are important. You don't necessarily have to take 2 guys "early" but get 2 good values, 2 guys with a good amount of job security. The biggest FAAB expenditure for people is almost always Closers, don't be short there. Save your $FAAB
