We should take the time to recognize that when (problematic) tweets are brought up from x yrs ago that if the tweeter hasn’t been transparent about changes from those ideas, or if their actions are consistent with the tweet in question then... yea, folks are gonna judge them.
No, we shouldn’t judge folks for shit they said when they were 15. People grow.
AND that digital footprint can be heavy, especially if there is consistency from tweets, to content made, actions, etc.
AND perhaps this is a good time for us to be clear that there might be something of a social media/digital ethic(s) that we’re figuring out. A code or politic through which we navigate digital space (&time) and be in community with each other.
Figuring out a digital ethics (if that’s what we can call this) would be, in part, understanding what accountability looks like.
And no... not everyone was violently antiblack growing up. Idk what kind of phases y’all are talkin about. It was messed up then too.
Perhaps this is what digital* accountability means to some degree. That unless you are clear/direct about a change from problematic/violent behavior, we don’t know if that has influence on who you are today.
