I was hoping that Twitter would remove the president's tweets, and I rolled my eyes at their fact-checking solution. However, after some thought, I realize that this is the best solution for so many reasons.
The president and his minions most likely wanted Twitter to remove the tweets. That is the narrative that they prepared for in the first place (hence the censorship talk from him). He wasn't expecting this, which is so, so, so much worse. Why?
This president will not admit making a mistake. If he says something that is wrong, he'll defend it even if it can be demonstrated to be wrong on every possible level. He is never wrong in his own mind.
Enter Twitter and their fact-checking. Not only does it tell the reader if the tweet is wrong, it attaches the correction to the president's tweet. Basically, Twitter is forcing the president to admit he's wrong. The president doesn't like that.
Let's hope that Twitter has a dedicated facility to this monumental task. They're going to need it.
