1/3 There's a tension between the impulse to punish Amy Cooper and the whole spirit of criminal justice reform.

The "ban-the-box" movement, for example, is premised on the idea that your worst mistake, even if it was rape or murder, should not define you forever.
2/3 I'm guessing that the people canceling this woman––all but guaranteeing that she will not work again for (at least) years––are, in many cases, the same people that would support efforts to de-stigmatize being an ex-convict.
3/3 It has become easy to say that you don't want to over punish ex-felons. Even republicans are now against the punitive spirit of old criminal justice ideas (see First Step Act).

The hard thing, now, is to notice that same overly punitive impulse in other contexts.
