I think this is probably worth a real quick explainer on executive orders: what they are and how they work, basically. Short thread 1/ https://twitter.com/acosta/status/1265772261929291776
Basically, executive orders are formal directives to government agencies. So you’re not going to see, for example, an executive order directing Twitter to do or not do something — there’s no authority for that. 2/
What can EOs do? Potentially change certain regulations or some kinds of bureaucratic activity, but these would be subject to normal process and any applicable statute (i.e., an EO cannot contravene law). 3/
But often EOs are used to do things like establish task forces or require agencies to submit reports updating the president on this or that. 4/
And an important point: as recent research from Andrew Rudalevige and others shows, EOs are often part of a collaborative process between agencies and the WH; that is, presidents aren’t just ordering agencies around willy-nilly; they’re bargaining and working together 5/
As far as what we’ll get here, I’m *guessing* it’ll be some kind of task force. I doubt it will be all that shocking, BUT there’s always a chance Trump’s lawyers find some old statute or something to interpret in a way that enables them to throw a real curve ball. 6/
Ultimately we’ll have to see. I’m interested to read it. 7/7
