Six years ago I was a Postmate after my regular hours at the mag I was working at at that time. We needed extra money for fertility costs, and I was tooling around NYC on my bike anyway.

That's how the order came in on my app. Obviously the red flags lit up greater than the 4th of July, but there weren't many orders coming in and I figured at least it'd be...amusing? Within minutes of taking the job, the texts started:

My phone kept pinging as I headed to the deli counter in the Fancy Pants UES Grocery to actually take a pic of this turkey this woman so desperately needed but couldn't be bothered to get herself

She even asked me to "taste" the turkey:
She was a woman OBSESSED with the juiciness of her poultry:

She wanted me to keep pestering the poor woman behind the counter while also not trusting anything she or I said apparently. Additionally, it was clear to me that the woman was used to customers like this. I was super grateful for her.

Finally *finally* she was convinced of the quality of the bird. Then it was on to the avocados.

Every so often I'll look at our 4yo and think, "I ate a stranger's turkey for you."
