If I said learning about the Holocaust in my American Cultures class was “pushing a political belief”, you’d call me crazy. Still, to this day, there are many people who deny the event altogether. Regardless, the Holocaust is taught extensively throughout West York curriculum. https://twitter.com/yorkdispatch/status/1265380294816944128
As a student in the district, I am ashamed of my school board. Rather than making an obvious and rational decision (based on College Board’s own curriculum) you’ve decided to rob students of valuable knowledge and shield them from proven facts— all to push YOUR political beliefs.
It is even more frustrating that students do not get a say in who is deciding how their school will run. Certain members of the WY School Board should feel lucky that the voting age is 18. If this was not the case, I can almost guarantee that they would not be where they are now.
For months, I have defended many decisions of the Board. Still, I can not accept this, and I encourage them to rethink their decision; this time with the student body in mind. As a member of the Board, one’s job is to act in the best interest of students in the district.
Instead of denying us the chance to learn certain information, allow us to judge for ourselves what is fact and fiction. I am confident in the ability of my peers to make an opinion regarding the topics in question, and I believe the school board who represents us should be too.
