I'm at an in-person news conference at LA City Hall, for the first time in awhile. Council President Nury Martinez just said a motion was introduced to put $100 million from the federal CARES Act into an emergency renter's relief fund.
Mayor Eric Garcetti just walked off after giving a statement on the Esparza indictment, saying it "sickens" him, and he said wants to "congratulate the U.S. attorney and the FBI for their good work ... " The conference started late, and he said he has a national call to lead.
More reaction to the indictment. Council President Nury Martinez says this conduct is disgusting ... and it's appalling that people will behave in this way."
Martinez said she'll issue a fuller statement by the end of the day. She responded to a follow-up on Huizar's status at City Hall, saying "I don't have that authority to make him resign, but I'm certainly looking into that very much."
Councilman John Lee was more reticent about giving his thoughts on the indictment, which mentioned his former boss Mitchell Englander and a June 2017 Las Vegas trip he confirmed he was on.
He said this was an ongoing investigation that his office was complying "100%" on by answering questions asked of them.
Some believe Lee is the City Staffer B mentioned in various indictment filings, but he did not answer that question directly today. He responded by saying: "Again, it's an ongoing investigation and you know, hopefully, some time soon after ... " (trailed off)
Lee added: "I hope this resolves quickly. Because there is this black cloud." In his two decades at City Hall, he said he has found that council members love the city, their districts and work hard. "All that will become clear," he said. But he said he's "not allowed" to comment.
Lee also said he'd be "happy to discuss" his personal feelings on what was in the Esparza filing "when we're allowed to discuss it."
