films as fashion houses (a thread)
đŸ“œ
basic instinct (1992)
gucci by tom ford (1994-2004)

sleek, sexy, & dark: ford’s gucci was made for daring femme fetales, & this erotic thriller’s iconic fashing scene fits the scandalous campaigns ford did for the house. stone is the devil in a white dress— the ford/gucci woman.
marie antoinette (2006)
dior by john galliano (1996-2011)

despite g*lliano’s disgusting views, there is no arguing that his work at dior was one of the most important moments in fashion. the extravagance in his haute couture shows has resembled that of antoinette’s insane life!
black swan (2010)
mugler by thierry mugler (1973-2002), mugler by nicola formachetti (2010-2013).

mugler’s aesthetic is very fitting with that of black swan’s, +a level of sexiness. thierry‘s work shows the classic ballet side, while nicola’s depicts black swan’s tone off stage.
the royal tenenbaums (2001)
gucci by alessandro michele (2016-)

wes anderson’s films scream gucci; wes + michele are a match made in heaven. however, no film embodies alessandro’s aesthetic like the royal tenenbaums. loud colors, 70’s inspired, there’s even a tracksuit involved.
i’m not there (2007)
celine by hedi slimane (2018-)

despite my distaste towards new celine, i’m not there has a rockstar quality with sophistication—something saint laurent lacked with its loud prints & 21st century silhouettes. a black suit+sunglasses is a new celine signature.
belle de jour (1967)
isabel marant by isabel marant (1994-)

belle de jour has a clean, bright and elegant parisian chic that i think is a large part of marant’s brand identity. it’s feminine and light, flowy and simple, like old cĂ©line’s younger, sweeter parisian sister.
call me by your name (2017)
jacquemus homme by simon-porte jacquemus (2018-)

jacquemus as a brand is a summer fantasy, and this is definitely no exception for simon’s menswear. something about it is so sensual & dreamy, and it fits call me by your name perfectly.
la collectionneuse (1967)
jacquemus by simon porte-jacquemus (2009-)

summer, the beach, & warmth defines jacquemus. in la collectionneuse, Ă©ric rohmer paints a painting in film of saint-tropez in the summer, and the colors in this film match jacquemus’ retro-inspired aesthetic.
breakfast at tiffany’s (1961)
givenchy by hubert de givenchy (1954-1995)

need i say more? audrey hepburn and breakfast at tiffany’s little black dress defined givenchy and made it what it was, and there would be no givenchy without it.
dior by christian dior (1946-1957)
phantom thread (2017)

the similarities between reynolds woodcock & dior are very evident; his silhouettes are reminiscent of dior’s work, and the dresses in phantom thread were clearly infuenced & inspired by dior, like many at the time were.
