[CN for entire thread. No details, but mentions of abuse, violence, neglect]

These last few weeks have seen a rising tide of violence against us being made public. Disabled people dying horrifically, being neglected and abused.

This isn't some isolated event, or a one-off.
We have known for a long time that we experience much higher rates of violence than our non-disabled peers.

Some key stats that we know:

1. People with intellectual disability are 10 times more likely to experience violence than people without disability.
2. People with intellectual disability are three times more likely to be victims of assault, sexual assault and robbery compared with people who do not have an intellectual disability
If you are in any doubt about this, the 2015 Senate inquiry report, into just a part of this violence, lays it out in stark details.

The time for that change was always now. And if you are just hearing about the violence we experience for the first time, back our calls for that change.

Disabled people know what needs to happen - an end to segregation and congregate care, for starters.
Disabled people being fully included in the community, having support to make decisions for ourselves, not put in prison for being disabled, justice for the violence against us.
These changes need everyone on board, and non-disabled people supporting (not speaking for) disabled people.

Listen to us, back our calls for change, and get behind our fight to be free of violence.
